Консорциум исследовательских центров АТЭСThe APEC Study Centers Consortium Conference was held on the 12-13th of May in Hanoi, Vietnam. Trends and Challenges to Economic Growth and Trade

The first session was devoted to the discussion of global trends in the international economy and trade and the impact of these trends on APEC economies. The participants discussed issues related to the growth of protectionism in the world, as well as the negative consequences that protectionism brings for economic growth and achievement of non-economic sustainable development goals.

Relevance and Dynamism for APEC in the New Context

In the second session, representatives of APEC research centers tried to determine the role of APEC in stimulating economic growth, development and cooperation, and in strengthening and deepening the integration processes in the Asia-Pasific region.

FTAAP: Ways Forward

The purpose of this session was to discuss possible further steps for the implementation of the FTAAP project, which is becoming increasingly relevant in the context of the US withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the seeking by many APEC economies of other formats of integration in the Asia-Pacific.

Education and technological innovation in promoting regional trade and integration

During this session, issues of economic digitization and the special role of educational and technological cooperation in stimulating competitiveness and economic growth of APEC economies were discussed.

Enhancing Capacity and Competitiveness of MSMEs

This session was devoted to the discussion of problems and possible policy measures aimed at stimulating the competitiveness of MSMEs, their adaptation to new trends and challenges in the APR and greater involvement in regional value chains.

Resielence and Sustainable Development

During the session, representatives of APEC research centers discussed issues related to the development of an economy resilient to climate change, and the role of APEC in ensuring the implementation of other sustainable development goals.

The researchers from Russian APEC Study Center (RASC) Nikita Pyzhikov and Ksenia Proka took part in the Conference and made a presentation in the framework of the first session. Russian experts delivered a report on the topic “Challenges and Opportunities for Economic Growth and Trade in the APEC Region: Unclosed Potential”. Representatives of the RASC reported on the problem of international trade growth slowdown and the reasons behind this negative trend. Special attention was paid to non-tariff barriers, which create significant impediments to trade both in the world and in APEC economies. According to the presentation, there is a great potential for trade liberalization in APEC economies, especially in the most protected agricultural sectors (dairy products, grain, meat, rice) and services. The reduction and elimination of non-tariff barriers can significantly contribution to the increased trade growth in the region.
